Historical floras reflect broad shifts in flowering phenology in response to a warming climate

چکیده
Organisms across the globe are experiencing shifts in phenological events as a result of ongoing climate change. Recently, variety novel methods have been applied order to fill gaps data set, which records often patchy temporal, spatial, and/or taxonomic resolution. Here, I tested whether changes flowering phenology could be detected through months stated 11 guides Swedish flora published over period 220 yr (1798-2018), focussing on 241 plant species (approximately 8% flora), and accounting for large increase herbarium that occurred same period. Despite coarse, monthly scale times reported, historical floras wildflower may hold potential temporal set. However, factors other than also influence any apparent time. was found start earlier (0.49 d/decade), end later (0.71 carry longer (1.19 with length associated increases regional temperature anomaly during 20th century (0.11 months/degrees C). First occurring 71% (14% showing significant negative trend), 68% ceased (20%), 80% flowered (29%). Detected appeared related species' seasonality. Later-flowering were flower longer, while increasing temperatures drive stronger responses both onset early-flowering cessation later-flowering species. Although issues exist regarding largely unknown ways by authors determined coarseness data, useful resource change research, identify compare broad climatic region's entire long time periods, well filling an otherwise

Flowering phenology shifts in response to biodiversity loss.
Observational studies and experimental evidence agree that rising global temperatures have altered plant phenology-the timing of life events, such as flowering, germination, and leaf-out. Other large-scale global environmental changes, such as nitrogen deposition and altered precipitation regimes, have also been linked to changes in flowering times. Despite our increased understanding of how ab...
متن کاملShifts in flowering phenology reshape a subalpine plant community.
Phenology--the timing of biological events--is highly sensitive to climate change. However, our general understanding of how phenology responds to climate change is based almost solely on incomplete assessments of phenology (such as first date of flowering) rather than on entire phenological distributions. Using a uniquely comprehensive 39-y flowering phenology dataset from the Colorado Rocky M...
متن کاملPhenotypic plasticity and adaptive evolution contribute to advancing flowering phenology in response to climate change.
Anthropogenic climate change has already altered the timing of major life-history transitions, such as the initiation of reproduction. Both phenotypic plasticity and adaptive evolution can underlie rapid phenological shifts in response to climate change, but their relative contributions are poorly understood. Here, we combine a continuous 38 year field survey with quantitative genetic field exp...
متن کاملSimulated warming shifts the flowering phenology and sexual reproduction of Cardamine hirsuta under different Planting densities
Climate warming can shift the reproductive phenology of plant, and hence dramatically reduced the reproductive capacity both of density-dependent and -independent plant species. But it is still unclear how climate warming affects flowering phenology and reproductive allocation of plant under different planting densities. Here, we assessed the impact of simulated warming on flowering phenology a...
متن کاملDivergence of reproductive phenology under climate warming.
Because the flowering and fruiting phenology of plants is sensitive to environmental cues such as temperature and moisture, climate change is likely to alter community-level patterns of reproductive phenology. Here we report a previously unreported phenomenon: experimental warming advanced flowering and fruiting phenology for species that began to flower before the peak of summer heat but delay...
